Clutches

The clutch is part of the manual transmission system. The clutch plate engages with the spinning flywheel of the engine each time that you release the clutch or change gear. Friction materials on the clutch plate wear over time due to friction. Eventually this can lead to 'slipping' inside the transmission or make it difficult and eventually impossible to engage gears. We can service all parts of your clutch.

How long should a clutch last?

How long a clutch will last is linked to your driving style. Holding your vehicle on the clutch (such as when pulling away on a hill) or riding the clutch (partially depressing the clutch pedal) can cause excess friction and the clutch to wear away quicker. Generally, a clutch should last anywhere between 50,000 miles and 100,000 miles with normal operation.

How to know when it's time to replace your clutch

Common symptoms of clutch failure include:

  • Difficulty selecting gears
  • Grinding or squawking noises
  • Clutch pedal getting stuck when depressed
  • A high bight point on the clutch pedal
  • Slipping clutch when revving
  • Car jumping out of gear
