Brakes

One of the most important safety features on any vehicle. The brakes on your car will wear down and degrade due to friction and heat generated from normal use. How long your brakes last will depend on driving style. But if they are wearing quicker than expected then there may be an issue with your brakes. We can service brake disk, pads, and brake fluid and carry out diagnostics and repairs to brake callipers and handbrakes.

Brake Judder

Brakes should bring you to a smooth stop. If your brakes are juddering, then it could indicate that the brake disks are unevenly worn. Variation in the thickness of the brake disk material causes a juddering sensation when the brake pads engage with the spinning rotor of the brake disk. It is probably time to get your brakes checked and possibly replaced.

Squeaking Brakes

Some noise from your brakes is not necessarily a cause for major concern. If your brakes are squeaking excessively during normal use, then it could indicate that your brake pads are significantly worn. How long your brakes last will depend on your driving style, so it is important to get them checked and replaced when necessary.

Grinding Brakes

A grinding noise from your brakes can have several causes. Sometimes caused by a build-up of surface corrosion on the brake disks which may require stripping and cleaning if particularly bad. A grinding noise could also be caused by severely worn brakes pads, where you are effectively left with metal-on-metal contact when you engage the brake pedal.

Soft or spongey brake pedal

Your brakes rely on hydraulic brake fluid to engage the brakes when you press the brake pedal. Brake fluid is hydroscopic meaning it absorbs water overtime. Water in your brake fluid can generate steam in the brake lines because water has a lower boiling point than brake fluid, making it easier to compress and less effective at engaging the brakes. We can test the water content of your brake fluid and carry out a brake fluid service if necessary. Other common causes of soft brake feel could include leaks or air lock in the brake lines. This could require bleeding to remove unwanted air in the lines or repair to fix leaks in the system.
