The following frequently asked questions may be of help to you.

Q | Do you have workshops to service my car?

A | Yes, we have two comprehensively equipped workshops - one at our Vulcan Road branch and one in the city centre. Each service centre has technicians, a service advisor/receptionist and a service manager.

Q | Why should I have my air conditioning serviced?

A | Up to 15% of the refrigerant gas will be lost annually and this will affect the cooling performance of your unit, it will also help improve hygiene and air quality with a regular cabin filter change, as it can become blocked with pollen. A regular air duct clean helps remove the bacteria and fungi that can cause unpleasant odours. Service air-conditioning units every 30,000 miles or two years to avoid expensive repairs. It is also a good idea to run your air con a few minutes every month, even in the winter, just to help keep the seals, hoses, parts and gas in good order.

Q | Do I have to get my car serviced by a main dealer?

A | No, you are not obliged (since October 2003) to get the car serviced by a franchise dealer during the warranty period. We will service your car according to the manufacturer's recommended schedule and criteria using only manufacturer approved parts. (The legislation only applies to the part of the warranty offered by the manufacturer, i.e. insurance-backed extended warranties offered by dealers are not covered and may stipulate different conditions.)

Q | When should I change my cambelt?

A | Each manufacturer has different time scales and mileages for cambelt changes. If you refer to your service book it should be outlined in there when it should be changed. A general rule of thumb is every 4 years or 40,000 miles but please check. If you have recently purchased a vehicle and are unsure when it was last changed then it is a good idea to get it replaced as a broken cambelt can turn into a very costly repair!! All cars sold by us are checked and if the cambelt needs replacing it is done prior to sale.

Q | I've heard that DPF filters on diesel vehicles can cause problems for certain styles of drivers. What is a DPF filter and what do I need to watch for?

A | DPF stands for 'diesel particulate filter'. Many modern diesel engines (and some earlier petrol ones) have a DPF which captures some of the 'soot' as it goes through the exhaust, thereby in theory lowering the emission levels. However, the resultant 'soot' needs to be cleaned off otherwise the filter becomes blocked and can be very expensive to replace. Our sales staff will be able to advise you whether the car you are considering has a DPF and whether your driving pattern is suited to this. Q | When maintaining my vehicle is it best to keep up a full service history?

A | Yes it is good to keep a full service history on any car if you can and will help in a higher valuation when you want to trade it in. The issue of a main dealer stamp is not so important nowadays, and we are happy with service records stamped by quality independent dealers, but we will take your car in part-exchange – regardless of service history.

Q | When does my car need an MOT?

A | The first MOT is due three years from the date of first registration, after that it must be MOT'd every year. You can have it MOT'd up to one month prior to the expiry date without losing the remaining time as any days/weeks left will be added on to the new expiry date.

Q | Do you fit tyres?

A | Yes we do offer this service at both our service locations and at very competitive prices. We DO NOT fit remoulds, part worn or secondhand tyres and only source tyres from professional approved suppliers. We also fit new valves and balance wheels where we replace tyres or carry out a puncture repair.
